CRN Releases New Guidelines for Melatonin and Gummy Supplements

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) announced the adoption of two new sets of voluntary guidance. One focuses on the formation, labeling and packaging of melatonin supplements. The other focuses on labeling of gummy supplements.

The new guidelines were adopted by CRN’s Board of Directors on Mar. 28.

According to the association, the updated melatonin guidelines provide recommendations regarding intentional overages during manufacturing, child-deterrent packaging and precautionary label statements.

“These guidelines are designed to ensure that consumers have access to products that are responsibly formulated, labeled and packaged,” CRN said in a statement.

With the growing popularity of gummy supplements, the new guidelines specifically address the unique aspects of the products, the association said.

“The new recommendations focus on labeling clarity, reducing unsupervised access by children, addressing potential choking hazards for small children and ensuring products are used as intended,” CRN said in a statement.

CRN is requesting members adopted the new guidelines with 18 months.

“These are just the latest in a series of Voluntary Guidelines that CRN members have adopted that underscore CRN’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of consumers and the integrity of the dietary supplement market,” said Steve Mister, president and CEO of CRN. “By setting these high standards, we help our members offer products that are responsibly manufactured and marketed, and widely trusted by consumers.”
